Check Websites for Scams, Viruses and Malware

 

 

Here are some websites that check other websites you suspect might be, shall we say, "less than honorable" or legitimate.

If you choose to use any one of these services, it might be best to use them all. One website I checked using these sites was rated 'safe' by one and as a 'scam' or 'untrustworthy' by the others.


  • Google Transparency Report : "Safe Browsing site status. Google's Safe Browsing technology examines billions of URLs per day looking for unsafe websites. Every day, we discover thousands of new unsafe sites, many of which are legitimate websites that have been compromised. When we detect unsafe sites, we show warnings on Google Search and in web browsers. You can search to see whether a website is currently dangerous to visit."

  • Norton Safe Web : "Look up a site. Get our rating."
  • PhishTank : "Out of the Net, into the Tank. Join the fight against phishing. Submit suspected phishes. Track the status of your submissions. PhishTank is a collaborative clearing house for data and information about phishing on the Internet."
  • ScamAdviser : From their website, "Check ScamAdviser Before You Buy".
  • ScamDoc Digital Trust Rating : From their website, "Scamdoc is a web tool that evaluates "digital identities" reliability (email address or website). It provides answers to questions frequently asked by Internet users: How to check if a website is reliable or not? How to detect fraudulent emails? How much do I trust a website or an Internet correspondent?"
  • ScanURL : "Check a website/URL for phishing, malware, viruses and poor reputation.   • Sucuri SiteCheck : "Free website malware and security checker. Enter a URL like example.com and the Sucuri SiteCheck scanner will check the website for known malware, viruses, blacklisting status, website errors, out-of-date software and malicious code."
  • URL Void : From their website, "Website Reputation Checker. This service helps you detect potentially malicious websites. Check the online reputation/safety of a website."
  • VirusTotal : "Analyze suspicious files and URLs to detect types of malware, automatically share them with the security community."
